When San Carlo Liverpool wanted to enhance the outdoor dining area at its Castle Street restaurant, the goal was to create more than just a practical boundary around the tables.
The barrier system needed to feel like a natural extension of the restaurant itself – elegant, distinctive and immediately recognisable.
The result is a bespoke outdoor restaurant barrier installation combining satin brass Flexibarrier posts with custom-made, double-sided San Carlo banners in the restaurant's signature green and white design.
An outdoor dining area that reflects the restaurant
Situated at 41 Castle Street in central Liverpool, San Carlo is an Italian restaurant where the outdoor terrace forms an important part of the guest experience.
For a restaurant in such a prominent city-centre location, the boundary around the outdoor seating area is highly visible to both guests and people passing by.
Instead of treating the barriers as purely functional equipment, San Carlo used them as part of the restaurant's exterior design.
The green and white striped banners create a strong visual identity, while the satin brass posts complement the restaurant's classic Italian styling.
Custom-printed restaurant barriers
The installation features 15 bespoke café barrier banners, manufactured specifically for the layout of the restaurant's outdoor seating area.
Each banner features San Carlo's green and white striped design with the restaurant logo prominently displayed.
The banners are manufactured from GP Frontlit PVC for outdoor use and printed on both sides. This means the design and branding are visible both from the street and from within the restaurant terrace.
Two different banner sizes were used:
- 14 × 1300 × 850 mm
- 1 × 800 × 850 mm
These were combined with 1 m and 1.5 m cross beams to create a barrier system adapted to the shape of the terrace.
Satin brass Flexibarrier posts
To complement the custom banners, San Carlo selected 11 Flexibarrier Premium Crown Top posts in Satin Brass.
The brass finish adds a premium detail to the installation and works particularly well alongside the green and white fabric design.
Each post weighs approximately 11.5 kg, providing the stability required for a busy restaurant environment.
The posts also feature a low-profile weighted base and integrated floor protection, helping to create a stable system while protecting the surrounding surface when posts need to be repositioned.
More than a boundary
For restaurants, an outdoor barrier system has several functions.
It defines where the restaurant's outdoor seating begins and ends, helps organise tables and pedestrian areas, and provides guests with a more clearly defined dining environment.
But with custom printing, it can also become a highly visible part of the restaurant's branding.
At San Carlo Liverpool, the finished installation brings together the restaurant furniture, brass details, striped banners and San Carlo branding into one coherent outdoor dining area.
The result is a terrace that is clearly identifiable as part of the restaurant – even before guests step inside.
